| The total vineyard area is 650 hectares. Planted between 1952
and 2004, the average age of the vines is 18 years old. 55% white
varieties - Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio, Riesling, Muscat Ottonel,
Chardonnay, Feteasca Regala and some other local varieties. 45%
red - Merlot, Cabernet Savignon, Pinot Noir, Kekfrankos, Feteasca
Neagra, Oporto.
The average yield is around 8 tonnes/ha for the red varieties
and 10 tonnes/ha for the white varieties.
From the total of 650 hectares - 110 hectares is new vineyards
planted with high quality clones from France and Italy within
the last four years (Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, Pinot Noir, Cabernet
Sauvignon, and Sauvignon Blanc) which are now starting to come
into production. The vineyard is increasing its vineyard investments
by planting each year 40 to 50 hectares of new vineyards - with
high quality clones of commercially successful varieties including
Shiraz. All the vineyards are planted on gently sloping south
west facing hills around the village of Recas (25km from the city
of Timisoara - 3rd biggest in Romania) which is also an official
DOC quality wine region recognised by the EU. The soils are mainly
limestone based, with rich iron oxide parcels.
All the vineyards are within 3 miles of the winery, and all grapes
are delivered within one hour of picking. The vineyard is 100%
privately owned by Cramele Recas (purchased from the Romanian
government as part of the 1999 privatisation process). They fully
control the vineyard farming programme and picking schedule. This
is a big advantage as opposed to companies which have to buy in
grapes, as it means that they can guarantee the grapes are properly
looked after and healthy which, in turn, means that they can leave
them longer on the vine up to optimum moment of ripeness.
